Asbestos tape is a heat-resistant insulating tape made from asbestos fibers, traditionally used for thermal insulation in high-temperature environments. It was commonly applied in wrapping steam pipes, exhaust systems, and electrical cables to prevent heat loss and protect surrounding materials. Known for its fireproof and chemical-resistant properties, asbestos tape could withstand temperatures exceeding 1000°F (538°C). However, due to serious health risks associated with asbestos exposure—such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma—its use has been largely banned or restricted in many countries. Modern alternatives include fiberglass, ceramic fiber, and other non-toxic, high-temperature insulation materials that offer similar performance without the health hazards.
